Staying In Touch Remotely

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an isolating experience for many people, and particularly for the 65+ population. Seniors are especially vulnerable to experiencing symptoms of sickness from the Coronavirus, and have been advised to isolate and stay away from others. During times like this, reaching out and connecting with friends and loved ones can be very helpful for staving off feelings of anxiety or depression. We are fortunate to live in a time when technology makes it easier than ever to stay connected to the important people in our lives.

Facebook

Still one of the most popular social media platforms, Facebook is a great option for staying in touch remotely. By “friending” someone, you’ll be able to see their latest posts about what they’ve been up to and view their photos and videos. You can learn what they’ve been reading, what they’ve been watching on TV and even view funny stuff they’ve been sharing. Facebook also has a chat function that allows users to chat online with other Facebook friends. Best of all, users can make video calls to their Facebook friends and then talk with them face to face.

FaceTime

If you have an Apple device, like an iPhone, iPad or MacBook, FaceTime is one of the easiest ways to video call any of your contacts. FaceTime comes already installed on Apple devices, so all you’ll need to do is click on the icon and select which contact(s) you’d like to connect with. It can be especially fun to arrange a FaceTime with several contacts at once, such as all of your grandchildren or maybe your Bridge group. In order to use FaceTime, each contact will need to have an Apple device.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp can be installed on virtually any smartphone or other device that has Internet access. Once installed, the app automatically pulls in your contacts. Then, you simply press the message icon in the bottom right hand side and choose a contact to chat with. There is also an option to create chat groups. In addition to text chat, WhatsApp may also be used to make phone calls and video chats to any of your contacts from anywhere in the world.

Zoom

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that offers a free subscription plan for consumers. It’s important to note that Zoom has taken several steps to address recently reported security risks. With Zoom you can host a free video call with up to 100 people! The is a great platform for a virtual family reunion or a virtual birthday party. By selecting the “gallery view” in the upper right corner, under “video settings”, you’ll be able to see everyone's faces at once.
